The Principles of Gardening
On a recent trip to Ojai, I found an interesting old book, “The Principles of Gardening” by Hugh Johnson. Some of the content is really interesting to understand soil, plants, and gardening in general. I’ve scanned a few pages and shared them here. If you guys are interested, I’ll post some more.
The intro segment about the gardener as artist is particularly eloquent!

September Heat
Looks like this weekend is going to be really hot.

Make sure the younger sprouts and seedlings are welll protected from the sun, specifically during the day, and make sure to give the young sprouts plenty of water. Even mist them a little bit.
A young hand planting a first seed
The plot now called “The Sound of Seed” has a young gardener called Cassia. This is her planting her first seed.
Thanks Kip!
Now that the garden is up and running, gratitude is heart-fully felt towards those who have made this place possible.
Kip thanks :
- Jennifer, Sheyla and her friend for sanding and painting the gate
- Norma for hauling back some tree planters
- Jennifer for cutting down the bamboo in corner, and Kevin for breaking them down
- Jonah, Kevin, and John for hoisting and placing the tree boxes
And everyone for planting and watering and caring for our beautiful, budding garden.
And we all thank Kip!
One plot holder wrote this great note :
“I went by last night when no one was there and just sat there absorbing the great environment. It’s really transforming and it’s so wonderful. You can feel that it is the start of something new and great in there. Kudos to you for making this happen for us all.”
Yeah!
Looking at leaves from close
I was at the garden today, looking at the beautiful growth. I snapped some pictures of some of the leaves and plants. When you look at them from very close you can see such amazing detail and shapes. Some of them even look like landscapes!
Venice Community Garden!
Everyone met at Kip’s house for a ‘plot luck’ lunch, in order to meet the ‘neighbors’ and to work on plot selection.
Kip and Norma had redrawn the plot plan to be more accommodating to the available space.
Kip explained the water situation and gave everyone an overview of how the garden design provided for common areas as well as the individual gardens.
Discussion about having an opening ‘party’ after the groundbreaking and bed installation was also part of the afternoon.
The garden is also fully subscribed at this time.
